Hi everyone, my name is Marie Flowers. I use Backyard Chickens as my go to website since I am new at chickens. This morning I went up to the coop and found my 17week old pullet laying. she's unable to stand. Her leg are underneath her and not stretched out. She will not extend her legs downward when I pick her up. I brought her down to the house. She's alert and eating. Her legs just aren't working. I can't feel any obvious breaks. I am was reading on Marek's disease. But some websites said they extend one leg. I just don't know what to do. Thank you for any info.

Mareks can cause lameness in either one or both legs. I would post this question in the emergency section here on BYC. It very well could be Mareks. I am so sorry about your hen.

I hope you can get her healed up soon.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your girl, hopefully somebody on the Emergencies forum will be able to help you figure out what is going on with her.

Do you have to cull a hen with Marek's? Will it spread to my other girls and how fast?

Mareks is contagious. And there is no cure. I am not sure if they recuperate from it, although birds can develop immunity to it. So keep her separated from the flock. Just because she has it, doesn't mean the rest of them do. It depends on each bird and the immune system. Here is a recent article here on BYC and the facts on Mareks....

Thank you for your help. I called the person I bought her from. He said they had their shots from the hatchery. She is doing much better today. I gave her vitamin B in her water. Today she can stand on her own and stand for up to a minute. Yesterday, she couldn't get up. when we stood her up, she'd fall down within seconds. I'm thinking maybe she was injured by the other birds. Keeping my fingers crossed that she continues to improve.

Glad to hear she is doing better! Hopefully it was just a sprain and she will be OK. :fl You don't have a rooster do you?

Yes, I actually have 2 roosters and 2 cockerels. We are going to be culling the 2 cockerels this weekend. She is doing even better today. It must have been a strain. whew!! This chicken mama was worried. lol
