Don't know what state you live in but there has to be a DNR warden on call. If it is damageing your property you should be able to dispose of it. A otter is near impossible to catch in a live trap. A otter will clean out your pond asap they are relentless eaters.

I absolutely agree... I hate to kill something, but we may have no other choice. Like I said earlier, we have a lot of $ and time invested in our ponds. I hate to hear about your Koi ponds

So sad.... We have to get rid of the raccoons and opossums that will eat my chickens and egg, the otter is the same thing... a predator.

We have learned a lot about otters in the last few days. It seems we may have no choice but to dispose of it. Several people have told us the live trap will not work. We now have some snares we are going to attempt to use... maybe we will have some luck.

Is that legal? Surely you aren't advocating breaking the law.

No, poisoning is not legal...at least not where we live. There are other ways of disposing of the animal without harming other animals in the process. We have a huge problem with coyotes in our area. It is perfectly legal to hunt and kill them, but you cannot poison them. If you poison them and they die in the woods, then whatever eats them will die also... not a good thing.

snares work well you just need a small enough loop and be right on their travelways just to narrow down the entrance or exit of your pond should catch them about a 5-6" loop a coupla 2-3 " off the walking surface just narrowing a trail and kina fencing the snare in with guides works pretty fair too

otters are weasels. just another member of the whole stinking family. skunks, weasels, ferrets, mink, martins, badgers, wolverines, otters. they are all the same. kill for fun half the time. #2 steel traps around the bank baited with eggs. set 4 or 5 in a cluster. stake them down. if you put a drag on them they will drag it into the pond and you will lose it when it hooks something. beaver traps work well too. just stake them in the water around slides and they drown. a good rifle and patience works too. they are hard to live trap. it can be done but it's hard. set the trap in the edge of the water and bait it with eggs. if you have ducks that nest around the pond they will eat the eggs and the ducks if they can catch them.

another option is a mid sized gator. most fish (except bottom feeders) are too fast for it. the otters are too for the most part, but you try catching a fish while something 2 or 3x your size is trying to eat you.
