Absorbing the yolk and the rest of the blood supply. If you are seeing movement in there and the beak is working, it is still absorbing. No need to worry yet, this process can take a while. If it starts to zip in earnest, in other words if the shell starts coming off in a line around the egg and then stops for more than about 30 mins, you might need to assist. But for now just wait...I need advice as well... Had an egg pip yesterday morning. Checked this morning and there is a small hole (dime size, maybe smaller) and can see movement. It's been like over 24 hours since the initial pip. What is this chick waiting on?
Thanks for the advice... Here's what we are looking at now:Absorbing the yolk and the rest of the blood supply. If you are seeing movement in there and the beak is working, it is still absorbing. No need to worry yet, this process can take a while. If it starts to zip in earnest, in other words if the shell starts coming off in a line around the egg and then stops for more than about 30 mins, you might need to assist. Yes, it is dry and brown looking, and yes, the chick is moving. Is the membrane as dry and brown as it looks in that picture? If it is you can get a cotton bud and gently moisten it. Is the chick still moving? Can you see the beak?
Done... now we're waiting to see any more unzipping. Thanks for the advice.Moisten the membrane then and see if that is enough for the chick to unzip. When the membrane dries out it can be harder for them to get out, but it is quite often just dried out where they pip.
If you still think you need to help then its better to start your own thread so people see it and realise there is an issue![]()
