Hey, sorry if this post isn’t in the right place but I’m new here and need some fast advice. Last night was day 19 of my hatch, and one of my eggs pipped externally, but this morning, small amounts of yellow ooze began crusting around the pip hole. The chick has made a few more cracks around the hole since then and is still peeping, but it hasn’t really zipped despite the fact that it’s almost been 24 hours. Should I assist or wait a little longer? It’s my first time hatching eggs and I really don’t want to lose this little guy or endanger the other eggs in the incubator.

Hi, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Your post is right where it belongs! Good job!

I hatch a lot and have seen that before. That's like the gunk on the chicks sometimes, probably yolk. I'm not sure but I ignore it pretty much as I've seen it enough.

The rule of thumb for assisting is if it's been more than 24 hours from their first pip. If they're still working on it, even after 24 hours, then I wouldn't assist. Chicks rest a lot when trying to maneuver out of the egg.

Here's a great article on assisting if you think it's necessary.

Thank you so much! That’s a relief to hear. I’ll give it a bit longer then!
