A lot of people use heated dog bowls. They also make heated bases to set the plastic chicken waterers on. I've also successfully used aquarium heaters submerged in the water.

I also use stock tank heaters in my duck pools and those work well.

I plan on using a small 6inch fish tank heater in a 5g bucket once it gets cold again. simple cheap and I know they work good .
