I’m looking to get a small bolt action gun, and it might be the hardest decision I have had to make in a long time I was thinking savage, but than I looked at marlins and that all went up in smoke now I know virtually nothing about what I plan to do, besides actually getting a firearm. . What I do know is that I’m not getting a LR so it’s between the 22mag and the 17. Both are relatively close to the same price, I won’t be using the gun I get to hunt for meat, just for sport (varmint hunting) stuff like that. My range would be about 100 yards max, maybe 120 if I was feeling frisky. I’m not sure and it’s hard to make a decision with having not used a 17 or 22mag. I was wonder what I should get, I think I could save A LOT on ammo with the 22. it will have a scope bipod and a sling on it if that helps

HELP ME

I have a 22mag it's alot of fun and ammo is cheap enough. I don't do any shooting with it over 50 yards but I know it would group fairly well. Mine is a ruger and use it for squirrel hunting. I have always wanted a .17 cal I hear it is very accurate and can be used for varmints. But they both can. I would go to a store and talk to someone who knows both calibers well and then make a informed decision. In the area you live in I would think there are people who know these calibers. Good Luck

I have the Savave .22 LR, bolt action, probably the one you looked at. It was my first gun purchase

It hangs on the wall, ready for dispatching chicken predators.

My son has a Winchester 9422M lever action .22 mag rifle. I have killed prairie dogs with this.
We also have 3 different .22 LR. 2 are bolt action one is an automatic.

I like the single shot bolt, the auto gets a round stuck once in awhile.

Okay..be aware that there are 2 .17 calibers (well three but we ain't gonna talk about the old one) One is a necked down .22 mag the other a necked down .22 LR

Gonna assume you are going with the .22 mag version

your .22 caliber bullets will wiegh more than the .17...the .17s will go tons faster

do a little research...virtually every gun magazines has done articles comparing the two...there are give and takes to both that you really need to decide for yourself

For me...it comes down to price...22 mags are lots cheaper to shoot

My Marlin in .17 HMR is a tack driver, 5 rounds under a a half inch at 100 yards, actually 0.446". Pick up a BSA Sweet 17 scope for it with the ballistic compensator on it and you are good to go. My .22mag never prints good groups like that.

Both the .22mag and .17HMR are a bit light for coyotes, but if your quarry is smaller, no worries.

Took a crow at 175 yards with the .17HMR, and my son said, "Dad, look at all the feathers." It is devastating on small game.

Why not a .223-you can shoot it more cheaply thay a 22 Mag or a .17 & it packs a lot more punch.
