Need advise 22 rifle Vs17

I have a 17 HMR single shot breach load. It is very accurate. But louder than a 22. .17 breaks the sound barrier and you get that rifle crack, not ideal if your trying to be quiet like hunting squirells. You can easily hit targets over 100 yards. I snipe rabbits at 80 yards head shots.

As stated before ammo cost more with 17hmr. The bullets fly very flat. You sight in at 100 yards and your sighted in form 75-150 yards.

I really like mine.

Have fun with what ever you pick.

Life is all about trade offs.

The 17HMR is very accurate but the gun and ammo are both very expensive and the bullet is too small for anything larger than a prariedog

The 22Mag isn't terribly accurate but the guns and ammo are pretty cheap, the bullet is larger but loses velocity faster so your range is cut down (though 100-120 yards is doable)

The 223 is step up in power (acceptable for coyote use) less accurate than the 17HMR, more accurate than the 22Mag but is more like a "real gun" and cost like it.
I wish I knew where NYREDS is getting his ammo because my sources have 223 ammo priced comparable to 17HRM

Here is some unsolicited advice...

If you are new to the sport of recreational shooting find a used gun from someone you know and trust. Most guns need a little smithing to be smooth and accurate and you shouldn't try that until you know what you're doing.

Also... get a bolt action. The semi-autos are toys as they lack accuracy and are unreliable.

I am a 30ish woman and I live in a very rural area on a few acres and I own several guns however keep my Henry 22 LR loaded by the back door. Usually with rat shot to take care of neighbors dogs. I have not had one dog I shot with a rat shot come back into my yard yet. I do have 22 shots here but need the rat shot loaded for non lethal shots as to not kill if I do not have to. Things may change when the chickens go in the coop. I love my little 22 it is easy to use and I am comfortable with it that is the main thing. IMO

.223
too much power, thats kinda why im afraid of the 17 i dont have miles to shot, just like 1 said 100 yards would probably top the charts
