Ok...I have 2 eggs that are supposed to hatch out anytime (see my other post for more info). Anyways...today my DD4 and her friend apparantly took the eggs and came to show us the eggs they "found". Well...the end of one of them was all cracked (we found out later that she dropped it). Mainly the shell is missing on that end (the bottom), but the membrane looks to be fine and unbroken. I held it up to my ear to see if I could hear anything, and I heard peeping, but it was coming from the other egg that I had in my hand! Anyways, I finally saw some movement under the membrane and some peeping as I was walking with it. I called a friend who suggested that I put it back under the momma and wait for it to hatch. Any suggestions on what I should do of if that is that best thing to do in this situation?

The peeping is coming from the crushed egg?

Eeekkk I hope someone else answers, since you have a broody not a bator. But if it's peeping, it may still hatch soon.

Yes the peeping is coming from the crushed egg. Honestly the egg doesn't look bad....mainly the shell is pretty much missing from the bottom end and all you see if membrane. The chick doesn't peep all the time...mainly when you move it (like when I walking to the coop to put it under the mama). I think I will go check on it one more time. I really hope it makes it!

If its due to hatch anytime, it might have a chance, although I doubt it will be able to hatch by itself. The membrane will dry around the chick like a mummy. The problem is if you must help it, is knowing when it is ready to hatch.

This is just an idea, I have NOT tried this myself, so I'd wait to see if anyone with more wisdom than me blesses this one...

Would it maybe be helpful to wrap the cracked end of the egg in facial tissue or toilet tissue dampened with warm water to help hold in the moisture and bump humidity for the baby chick??

Just a thought - let's see if anyone concurs or thinks this is an awful idea!

Oh my! I hope it works out for you

I have good news! I went outside to check on it one more time and found it all curled up on the floor of the coop....about two feet away from Momma Hen. So I quickly brought it inside and put it under a brooder light to warm it up. I'm not sure what happened to it and if it hatched on it's own or Momma Hen started pecking at the shell. There was no sign of the a shell at all when I found the baby. I thought for sure it would die...but it's doing GREAT! It's starting to dry out now and move around as well as drink water. The poor little guy has been through a lot today! I will post a picture if I can figure out how to. (any suggestions on that would be helpful too...lol) Thanks so much for your advice!
