Hi all!

I got my order of quail chicks today, they were supposed to be 3 weeks old but some look as young as a few days up to 2. Weeks. I have never had quail chicks before only my adults so I’m not 100 % but I do know there is quite the age range.

I have them set up in a large rabbit cage indoors with a heat lamp in 1 corner floor temp is about 90F....

My thought with putting it in 1 corner is that the older chicks can gauge how hot and cold they need to be but....

Am I going to kill these things by doing this????

I have 2 separate waters 1 close to lamp and 1 further away and a central feeding bowl.

Any tips on how to improve this setup?

I wouldnt put feeder or water under the heat. Away from there. They will tell u if they arent warm enough by huddling under the light if they arent warm enough. If they are by outer edges of light then they are good. If they are far away from light most of time then its too hot.

They start getting feathers a lot faster than chicken chicks do. At 3 weeks they should be almost completely feathered with some fluff remaining on their head and middle of back. If they are all fluff no feathers they are less than a week old.

Your setup looks ok to me, its large enough they can get away from the heat if they need to and small enough they can't get far enough away to get lost/chilled too quickly. They should be ok. :)

Most are all fluff! Thanks for letting me know, I have my adults that I LOVE but I know nothing about chick development.

They are eating, playing and napping and oh sooo cute!

Also can anyone help me out with socializing? Our first trip of quail were hand raised and the sweetest girls on the planet. The next batch was not and made life a little more interesting. How often should we be handling them?
