Need clarification on make a dust bath with DE?

I was rereading your post, and I must say, you NEED to clean your couches (lol!) if your chickens want to dustbathe on them...haha

Lol our couches are clean, only a couple of months old (we vacuum them regularly, thanks to two young kids who like to eat in the living room!). I don't know why she keeps trying to dust bathe on them, aside from the fact that they are brown and soft. She's only ever dust bathed once while outside, any other time it's on our couches or occasionally on the carpet.

You would generally want to avoid beach sand. All purpose or river sand is best.

Okay, thank you. We do have a couple of rivers in the area we can get sand from (we live on Kauai, so lots of sand here!).

DE is a great product. But, make sure you use food grade.
I got hay once with mites.............my poor itchy hens!! DE saved the day!

ok, silly question......how do you know they are trying to dust bathe on the couch?.....what does that look like?

I'm very new to chickens and mine are about 2 months old. We are constructing the coop and I'm gathering info on dust baths, etc. And I guess I'm not sure what it looks like when they "dust bathe"
