Need climbing plant help

I'd be wary of planting grapes, a friend did and was overun with raccoons who demolished them. Wouldn't want to attract them if they weren't already in the neighborhood.

add trumpet vine to the list of climbers they are great hummingbird attractors
pole beans
mini gourds
small squash all can be trellised to create a barrier this year until your other woody vines take over

I use Confederate Jasmine to densely cover my ugly chain link fence. It grows fast, doesn't die back in the winter here, covers itself with zillions of intensely fragrant flowers that can be enjoyed all over the yard. I've found it doesn't attract any varmits and it's glossy dark green leaves are pretty year round.

There is also a yellow flowered jasmine (Carolina Jasmine) that is pretty but the blooms have no scent. In my yard, flowers have to do more than one thing to make the cut! They better be pretty, hardy, fragrant, weird, edible, have prolific blooms or make me coffee in the morning! HA!

It's terrible that 2 of my favorites for this can't be used, but using them in my front yard.

On thing to consider with your vines - do you want them to lose their leaves in the fall or stay green all year & give coverage all year? Ivy will stay green all year but most of the vines will lose their leaves (grape, trumpet, wisteria - I have all 3)

Another option is a berry - they have thornless raspberry vines. You could also try a climbing rose bush - I love the cherokee rose bush and cecil bruener (sp?). My grapes were slow to start but in their 3 year - wow - they took off!

Don't know if any are poisonous though. have fun!
