Need dosing info for praziquantel 23 mg

Hi, have tapeworms confirmed in one of my 5 month old gals. She is 4 lb 10 oz. I do not want to use ivermectin (in the Equimax equine) so I would prefer to just use praziquantel solo or with valbazen (if necessary for better coverage?)

I have found this at my local Walmart. Is there anyone that knows how much I would use? Thank you!

I first posted 10 per pound, but corrected it to read 10 mg per Kilogram (2.2 pounds.)

@Eggcessive one 23mg pill would work for a 5 lb hen but she is 4 lb 10 oz. It would make my life easier to give her one pill instead of trying to divide it etc. Do you know if this is safe to go a tad over since I don’t have a 20 mg pill?

I would either give it like it is, or scrape a little off the edge of the tablet first if you are concerned about overdosing.

@Eggcessive the 5 month pullet I used single drug praziquantel for tapeworm on is still working out the kinks in her reproductive cycle and occasionally lays a soft egg. Two days after I wormed her she laid a soft egg and ate the yolk only before I found it. Now it’s been 8 days since I first dosed her and I just found she laid another one during the day and ate it. She is due to be re-dosed On Thursday (for her day 10 repeat) and I’m nervous the tapeworms are going to be resistant. Do you know if this is much to worry about? The meds did the trick but I’m nervous it won’t work on her follow up bc of this. Thanks for any advice or thoughts.

I would go ahead and give the follow up dose as scheduled. Her soft shell egg laying may be from being a new layer, but that should not affect her being treated for tapeworms. She may need some extra calcium with vitamin D 3 for several days. I suppose that you are feeding layer feed or putting crushed oyster shell out for her to take.

Yes I definitely will be giving the follow up dosing in two days. My concern is that there is possible drug residue in her eggs from her first dose of praziquantel. If she ate small amounts in the soft egg then I’m concerned it could create a tapeworm that is resistant to praziquantel. Do you think that’s an issue? I’ve not heard much about this so I’m just wondering.

I really doubt that would be too likely. The amount of residue would probably be minute. If this happened for a long period, that might happen, but praziquantel probably wouldn’t be in the eggs for more than a couple of weeks. I can’t find any studies on the the exact time, but many drugs are cleared by 14 days.
