I just got the 5 month old cockerel and was told it had a “weepy eye” as a hatchling that was treated with saline. I think I got sold a bill of goods as the next morning his eye is pus-filled. I desperately need to know if this is contagious, what it is, how to treat it and if there are any preventative measures I should take with my hen flock. The seller claims it’s excess tear fluid that just needs to be wiped away with saline.

Be sure to keep him in quarantine for a month so you don’t infect your other chickens. Personally, I would return him. Wash hands, and change shoes between your coop and where he is kept. It could be an eye infection, but some respiratory diseases (MG, coryza) can cause gunky drainage from the eye. Is there a bad odor? Ideally you would want to culture the eye drainage to see what it grows, if your vet would do that. MG can be treated with Tylan 50 injectable given orally, or Tylosin powder in the water. But he would remain a carrier of MG. If he has something in his eye which has caused an infection, he might respond to other antibiotics.

Thank you, there is no odor. Appreciate your quick response!
