Question: I have a chick that needed "assistance" because there is a sticky gooey substance on it. Looks like... kinda like merang. (You know like the white stuff on a pie) Or like carmelized sugar. It's very odd. Any guesses? I'm wondering if I should give it a QTip bath with warm water? It's been 24 hours and it's still keeping some of it's feathers stuck. It should be fluffy by now, but it's still like dried goo.

Thoughts?

ETA: I just found a couple posts. One says it happens when the humidity is too high, one says too low. One says the chick will be fine, one says the chicks often don't make it. AHHH!! Contradicting posts!

Oh, have to ask, what color is that one in the last picture, not the little chipmunk brown one, but the almost silvery color..very pretty!

That would be wet yellow fluff.

Sometimes perfectly healthy chicks will even die. I have had "sticky" chicks do just fine. I think you might of had humidity problems, but not positive. I do think you should remove as much of the substance as you can without causing too much stress or draft. I normally just use a warm damp paper towel, and just lightly wipe out what will come off without any force. The chick still has a chance if it sucked everything up.

Baby number one is here!! Sooo loud and lots of energy! I put him in a paper towel lined little bowl because he was doing flips all over the incubator knocking over all the eggs. He climbed out and is almost able to reach the heating elements... I am going to go ahead and get him out in a little bit. He gets so happy when I look in the window at him! So cute
