Hi I've a bit of a chicken emergency and need advice - I've four week old chicks (some mostly feathered others mostly fluff with little wings) and our heat lamp blew last night :/ we wrapped their brooder with a blanket and they all survived the night (albeit unhappily) I heard if you feed them cayenne pepper it'll help keep them warm - can I free feed it or will they overdose? are they even old enough to give it to? Are there any other powerless ways to keep them warm? I've heard of using a hot water bottle but the brooders in the coop and it would cool down too fast :/ Thanks for any help guys!! I've 9 chicks in the brooder if that helps.

Don't have a garage :/ We made the poultry coop out of the portable garage. I'm worried the dogs (well mostly my terrier mix) would literally scare they life out of them if I brought them inside :(

These do not have to be Christmas lights, but they run on 110. Read all of the "be careful" stuff, but if you had a heat lamp then you know already. Maybe this will help until you can replace your bulb.[/QUOTE]

At four weeks they're going to huddle together to stay warm. What part of the country are you in? What are your daytime/nightime temps?

Are you saying bulb blew or power is no longer available? You can use a heat pad on low or regular light bulb. How cold is it where they are?

Our average temp for the next couple weeks is estimated around 14*C with a low of 5* ( 41-57*F) with a fair bit of temperature variance from day-day and day-night

I believe the lamp just blew but I don't have a heater or heatpad or anything like that :/ It'll be approx a week before I can get out to replace it

That seems a little chilly to let them go on their own. Do you have a 100 watt regular (incandescent) light bulb?

The LED and CF ones will not work. Can you steal an incandescent from your fridge or clothes dryer? They are usually low wattage, but better than nothing.
