NEED HELP ASAP WITH ITTY BITTY CAT!!!! long post

I am so happy that she seems to be coming along - that sweet little thing has such will! And now that she's back with her mom, she doesn't feel alone and scared. Sending countless wishes for a full recovery!

Given her compromised condition, I would hesitate to use any toxic chemicals/pesticides on her sticky spots at this time. She may ingest or absorb them and not be able to process them. Carefully cut away as much as tarred fur as possible with small goiod scissors. Re: the paw pads, the least toxic choice is best and as was recommended above, put on rag well away from the cat so nothing get sprayed near her, and so the least amount of odor is near her, clean the pads and wash them thoroughly immediately afterward so she's not licking the stuff. She'll still absorb some through her skin which is why least toxic is crucial. Maybe if you call vet's offices they'll have additional recs re: what you could use at home to get the stuff off. This link is about the very question of safely removing pine tar/sap from pets. Rubbing alcohol, mineral oil, Desolve It (a supposedly nontoxic product from Walmart, but ingredients would have to be verified to be okay). If the mineral oil works it is probably the least toxic.

Your question about sub-Q fluids - not dumb at all. It is always okay to ask any question under the sun when you are trying to help a being in need.

maybe you can give her a haircut! i once found a cat that was so matted with god only knows what i had to give her one! she actually enjoyed being bathed and snipped down,i think she could tell it was helping!

* WD-4O is great stuff, but DH reminded me it IS a petroleum distillate and may be absorbed through the skin. Possibly not a great idea for a kitty already in a bad way. Maybe a dab of Crisco?? If it's really bad, I would trim it off carefully. She may look like a rag-a-muffin for awhile but it'll grow back.

What does WD-40 contain?
While the ingredients in WD-40 are secret, we can tell you what WD-40 does NOT contain. WD-40 does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, wax, graphite, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), or any known cancer-causing agents.

I was told by a Rep from the company that it is fish oil based.

I'd still wash the kitty thouroghly if I used it.

yea for the kitty. She is going to make a full recovery. You did a very good job and did everything right!

If you are still concerned about the sap tar try vegetable oil. It should help the tar slide out of the fur and skin and it wont hurt her. Just rub some on the tar & work it in.

My doxie decided to play with the sticky mouse trap. She had it from head to tail in all sorts of different positions. Sure wish I would have had a camera to catch that action

www.snopes.com sez:

As for the claim the "basic ingredient" in WD-40 is "fish oil", it's a common rumor and one that is easily propagated (because cans of WD-40 spray include no ingredient list) but a glance at the composition information included in the Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS - http://www.wd40.com.au/msds/ChemWatch MSDS WD-40_Aerosol.pdf) for WD-40 aerosol indicates the product is primarily petroleum-based, with the main ingredient being "solvent naphtha, petroleum, medium aliphatic" (also known as Stoddard Solvent):
"solvent naphtha, petroleum, medium aliphatic >60%
petroleum base oil as paraffinic distillate, heavy,
solvent-dewaxed (severe), 15-25%
corrosion inhibitor unregulated, 1-10%

Given how sensitive cats are to all sorts of things, even lysol and aspirin and tylenol, I would not be messin' around with WD40 on an already debilitated cat, myself.

Good luck,

get some nutrients and minerals in her FAST, also make sure she drinks lots and lots of water.

i reccomend wet food, primarily tuna for the first few days of nourishment. you can add dry food if she wants more food.

I have to agree with the WD-40 issue....I WON'T BE USING IT! If I don't know what's actually in it, I don't want to be putting on her. Besides, her skin is red and irritated underneath all the pitch and I don't know how much more she could tolerate. I started to trim off all the spots that have matted up. It's too bad...she has wonderful long fur and now she looks absolutely terrible. As someone already mentioned, she is letting me cut it out without fussing because she seems to feel a little better with it gone. I let her out the bathroom last night so that she could sleep with me and she couldn't get close enough. She was definately happy to be with someone.

Update: during the night she drank some more of her water. I left a bowl of it out for her over night since she was drinking it too fast. I also gave her a little bit more of the food mixture and she only ate 1/2 of it. She's also got a lot more pep to her. Hopefully these are all good signs.
