I own and breed purebred Nubian dairy goats, FB Boer meat goats and have a flock of about 60 Dominicks, Buckeyes, Buff Orps, RIR's, White Leghorns, Aurcaunas and one cuckoo maran hen ;^) I have been an English Shepherd breeder now for about 6 yrs. IMO, there is no other breed more qualified than a good ol fashioned purebred ES to care for poultry. They are gentle with the chicks, can carry an egg if desired without breaking it, will guard your stock with their lives, erradicating predators. Make sure you get a pup that has been exposed/raised on a farm WITH chickens, cats, etc.
I own 4 ES.
They are not that well known, rather a 'rare' breed as they almost went extinct years ago. It is not real easy to find a breeder but you can google the Englsih Shepherd, check out the ES club, etc and gather lots of information that way. There are numerous yahoo groups organized about owning an ES.
Getting a pup with good working traits, the right temperament from proven parents is your number one desire. Color should be your least concern but I will mention that the ES comes in Black and white, Tri-color (blk-brown and white) mostly with the white Irish collar and white blaze (often mistaken for the Border collie but NO where like one), Sable and white, Clear Sable and white and solid sable and white. My 4 are each of those colors except we do not have the Black and Whites. I cant figure out how to browse my PC album and add a photo to this post but there are plenty pics of ES online ;^)
Weights range from the smaller scale adult of around 35 lbs, on up to the larger scale ES of 65 to 80 lbs. I personally prefer the large ES as we have lots of coyote to fight off around these parts.
I do not have any puppies right now but if you decide you are interested I can help you find a pup or add you to the waiting list for our next litter planned for 2012.
Here is the link to my website where there is a lot more info, photos and descriptions of this beautiful devoted family working dog. There are also more Links on my Links page there:
