Today I went into my quail pen to clean it up and while picking up a bird I noticed blood on my hand. I turned the frmale over to see where she was bleeding from and it is coming from her backend. Not sure how to explain and at this time i don't have pix. There was an egg in the cage so I don'y know if this is what happens after they lay a egg. Please any info.
Thanks for helping,
Patty

What type of quail are we talking about here? Many times Coturnix, who start to lay early in life, can have egg laying issues. If a hen lays an egg to large for her, she may have to force it out. This can cause blood, egg binding or prolapse.

Watch this bird. Make sure they have plenty of water at all times as dehydration can cause egg laying issues. Make sure the females have plenty of oyster shell or cuttle bone for hard egg shells.

If this happens again to this female, make sure the others do not pick on her bloody butt. Quail see blood and will go after it. If she really gets prolapse and you want to save her, you can stuff her back together and use Prep H to reduce swelling. Keep her in a semi darkened area for a while so she does not lay. She may then heal.

Sometimes it is a chronic thing and you may have to put her down.

Hello,
Sorry yes it is a Cortunix. It does look like her inside is coming out of her behind. They didn't start to lay until later. I think I will have to put her down but I don't really know how to humanily. What is a humane way?

I did try to push them back in but it didn't work it just popped right back out. She continues to pant really hard even with water in there. I don't want her to suffer.

Thanks for the info,
Patty
