Need help getting started raising chickens!

My husband and I recently moved to Crawfordsville Indiana and our new house is what I lovelingly refer to as semi-rural. We have .60 acres, a large pole barn and a field next door. Therefore, I NEED to have chickens! My mom always said I was a farm girl at heart, and my heart is bursting with a desire to have chickens. I have nothing and know nothing about chickens so I thought this would be the best place to come and learn.

You were right to come to BYC, there are many, many knowledgable people on the forum. Don't be shy about asking questions in any of the different sections!

You'll need to decide whether you want chicks or grown chickens, how many, and what breed. Do you want them for egg laying? Do you want them to be friendly? The options are endless! If you want chicks, you'll need a brooder with heat and food, water.

If you want chickens, you'll need a coop to keep them in if you've got predators, and it sounds like you've got a large area for free ranging if you choose to do so.
