Hi. My fiance and I rescued a baby duckling a few weeks ago from off of the highway. He/she has been well and healthy since we found it almost 3 weeks ago. But we noticed yesterday it's beginning to have some sort of growth on the joint of it's leg and the corner of it's wing. The leg's skin even appears to be peeling back and becoming red/bloody (probably because it's getting larger?) and the wing's feathers around the joint are going away by the growth (may be bc the duck could be picking at it?). Other than that the duck runs around quickly and often and eat and poops fine. Doesn't appear to be in pain yet? Any help on what this could be and the treatment for it would be great. Thanks! Hope ya'll can help. (stays in house for now so nothing outside has injured it)

I have not seen this kind of thing, but if it were me, I would put an Epsom salt compress on each one - it takes a little time waiting there, holding the compress, but Epsom salt has all kinds of benefits including drawing out toxins and soothing tissue.

If you are feeding chick starter, this could (but this is a long shot) be related to niacin deficiency, so adding 100 to 150 mg plain niacin per gallon of drinking water daily for one week won't hurt and may help.

Hard to know if it is bacterial or fungal. You could try mixing a drop of oil of oregano in a tablespoon of olive oil or coconut oil and putting a little bit of that on the problem spots. Oil of oregano has antimicrobial properties, and coconut oil is anti fungal. Both oils are soothing to the skin.

Next question - could the little have become startled and slammed into something? Might repeatedly rubbing against something in the brooder be causing and aggravating the injuries? Anything that might be irritating to skin in his or her environment?

Those are my thoughts. I need to go build some fence, so I will be away from the computer for a while (hours - I am not fast), but there are many good, knowledgeable helpful people here who know about ducks.

One thing I would add to the above is clear iodine. Let the baby swim for a bit in some warm water and then dry the spot and paint a bit of the clear iodine onto the sore. I had a duckling who would use one of the others as a 'wubbie' and would constantly nibble on the other when it was time to sleep. Just like a child with a security blanket, needing to rub the thing until they fall asleep. See if you can catch this. It isn't hard to cure.

Hi, thanks for the advice. I've been doing the Epsom salt compresses which looks pretty soothing for the duck. It did not hit itself against anything and it doesn't have any other ducks around to mess with it. Nor does it look like an injury that was made, but rather something that just formed on the skin. The growth on it's leg is getting larger and feels a bit soft on the inside. The leg has me worried since it is getting much larger (looks like a big bubble filled with something). We are thinking that lancing it would be the solution? Any suggestions or advice on this?
