This was purchased as a straight run of Black Copper Marans. I have not found a bird like this under Black Copper Marans. Appreciate any help with what it actually is.

Which hatchery was he from or if from a breeder, what breeds did they sell?
Breese Farms. I purchased Black Copper Marans and Wyandotte. The breeder said this rooster is Black Maran and will throw all varieties of Marans??? I did ask. He just said it was a beautiful Rooster and keep it for sure. I got four Roosters out of six birds. One traditional looking Rooster, the one in question, and two black roosters.

Thinking he might be a Marans cross then.

Black Marans and black copper Marans are based on different genetics and should NOT be ran together OR sold as Black copper.. that's false advertisement and foolishness (subpar breeding) at best, IMO! Calling themselves a rare breed hatchery is accurate when their breeding hybrid crap that doesn't exist. This is NOT the first set of CRUD I've read about from that hatchery..

If you care anything about breeding to the standard of perfection, then HE is a tasty dinner. His eyes are black (in this pic) and the silver would be thrown by Birchen maybe but not copper which is red or straw colored when bled down. He is NOT pure for BCM, period.

Welcome to BYC! :frow

No rudeness or ugliness meant towards you or that cockerel. That hatchery on the other hand needs a wake up call.

Their reviews were good. Personal service was excellent. Looking at the birds I received, this one is the only one I am questioning. He looks like a Blue Birchen( not sure if that is how you spell it?). The others look like Black Copper Marans I have seen in pictures. The Wyandotte birds we received all look the same except one we call Blue. Pictures below
