Need help! Laying first egg, something's wrong graphic picture*egg^ *

Phew, it goes to show that sometimes the vet is what we need. I try as much as possible NOT to take my girls, because the stress of being in the surgery almost does them in, but sometimes, we can't manage their illnesses alone. The vet becomes a necessity.

You're so lucky to find a skilled vet who will treat your girls. Much love and good vibes coming your way for little Sweetie's recovery

I am so happy she is doing better. I was showing my husband this post and he kind of got worried. The chickens are mine, but he hopes we don't have to go through this and wanted me to find out how to treat it if it does happen.

I'm so happy that you were able to find someone to take care of her. You must be exhausted poor thing. If you do get back online can you describe what the vet did so all of us can learn? I'm wondering why the membrane was wrapped around the egg and you couldn't find the opening.

I'm so glad everything worked out!

I didn't get to see what the vet did, they took her in the back and left us waiting for about 30 minutes. I think what caused this was the egg was so big and it being her first, she pushed so hard that the egg came out through a weak spot, not where it should have and that's why it was surrounded by her tissue. The vet had to guide it to come out the right way, and then the prolapse went back in. The vet gave her a shot for the pain and a shot of a cortizone to help with the swelling.
I have her in the dark now to try to prevent her from laying another egg today so it has time to heal. Sweetie is still exhausted and fell asleep with her head in the food dish. She has been sleeping in a sort of downward facing dog position, keeping her rear in the air.
I think I would too, poor baby! My daughter wants to hatch the egg.

Thanks for the updated info. I guess if the hen is prolapsed and can't find the 'exit' hole get to a vet. I'm so glad she is O.K. Give the poor thing love and kisses and take care of yourself too. I'm sure you are just as exhausted.

Yay!

I am so glad to hear the news about sweetie! I hope your DD can hatch the egg- that chick would have quite the story if it hatched! Toss it in the 'bator and see what happens- good luck! And keep us updated on sweetie!
