Oh how awful! I just started to read this thread...Please know that good thoughts are being sent your way. And for your DD as well. I truly, truly hope things start to turn around... Please keep us updated?

Update on the egg: I just candled Sweetie's egg and there are veins growing!
I just hope the prolapse is not inherited as someone on the forum said it is. I can't find anything about it being genetic on the internet. Does anyone else know about it?

i'm so sorry for your loss. i just found this thread. i had a hen prolapse just like yours, on her very first egg. i did have a chicken vet nearby and rushed her there. She couldn't find the opening either so made a small incision and got the egg out. She pushed the prolapse back in and i think gave her an injection of pitocin? She recovered and is fine now.

So i'm wondering why your little Sweetie passed? It's so sad, but also doesn't make sense. i'm sorry to be inquiring in your time of grief. Have you considered having a necropsy done?

Again, i am so very sorry about your little girl.

I wish I could afford a necropsy. I would really like to know why she died. The vet I found didn't specialize in birds, but she was the only one who was willing to help. I am definitely not ordering from Ideal Hatchery again. Out of the 10 bantams I ordered only 4 haven't had any problems. But Ideal did refund me for the 4 that had obvious problems soon after I got them.

i've found that most vets will perform a necropsy for free. i would think the vet who treated your chicken would do that for you, as a courtesy. i've never been charged for one myself, especially when the vet was the treating doctor. Or, i wonder if there is a vet hospital or some other type of entity (state, federal, or county) that might be able to do one.

i'm sorry for your experience with Ideal. i had my one and only order from them in February, and everyone seems fine. If you had so many problems, they may have a bad breeder supplying their chicks.

i'm not sure a prolapse is a genetic issue. i honestly don't know for sure. My one hen that prolapsed, i bought the eggs from a very reputable person on this board. So hers was probably due to it being her first egg, and something got snagged on the way. i'm relieved it hasn't happened again.

i hope you can get your vet to do a necropsy. Even if she is not a chicken specialist, she should be able to give you some sort of idea as to why she passed.
