I want colored eggs really bad, and I know that there are a bunch of chickens that lay colored eggs, but I am reall confused with all of the different breeds ! Which one is best? Which would be a cold hardy bird ? Do some lay better than others ? Which one would you suggest ? Does anyone know of any good birds like this in Maine ? Also feel free to send pics, maybe it will help me decide !!! Thank you so much !!!

Thank you Cats Critters, that helps ! You have beautiful birds ! I had no clue what I was doing when I got my very first batch of chickens , so we got RIR & NHR . Pretty boring to look at, but awesome birds !This spring I bought 4 white leghorn , 2 silver laced wyandott , and 2 black astralopes. I am going to sell some of the older girls to make room for the newer girls, but I would still like to get a couple of colored egg layers . I think that the colored eggs are the coolest !

your welcome! my 3 girls(one did not get it's picture taken) lay green eggs, and their from ideal if you where wondering. And the two roos in the top picture (one's EE, and one's a CM/EE) along with two other roos (both WL/EE) are looking for new homes

These are from my EE's. They just started laying. I got my girls from Mt Healthy and Meyers Hatchery in Ohio. When i seen what colors my first 5 EE's gave me I ordered 4 more!

The light brown egg on the right is from my silver laced wyandotte. We live in ohio and it gets pretty cold here. My husband put insulation in our coop and put electric in also. I think i will get a heated water bowl so their water doesnt freeze. I might even hang a red heat lamp above their water.

I almost forgot. When you order your EE's, if thats what you decide to buy, the Hatcherys call them Ameraucans or Arucanas.

WOW , what beautiful birds ! I need to find someone near me that has some, I don't want to get chicks this time of the year . How long do I need to keep chicken seperate before I introduce them ? Thanks for the help !! I want more chickens !! Need a bigger coop !

They need to be the same size. Most wait until the younger ones are 16 to 18 weeks old before trying to put them in with the bigger girls.

Ging3r - your birds and their eggs are beautiful!!!!

Here is my EE. She's only 12 weeks, so not laying yet. This is probably a silly question, but does the color of the bird have anything to do with the color of egg she lays?
