I have a barred rock black sexlink mix rooster I think and he grew up with my Silkies. He was brought to me with legs going out to the sides and managed to fix it when he was a chick. Here recently he has been grabbing the Silkies by the neck. Any suggestions other than keeping him in a separate pen.
Hope I put this in the correct thread? Kinda new to this.

Mixing large breeds with small breeds has really ever worked out for me anyway. Back in the day, we did small birds for show. When we wanted egg production, we were basically in the same boat as you.
They had to be housed separately. Can't enter a battered bird in a show. When we stopped showing, concentration was on breakfast eggs.

Separate quarters is recommended from me. Opinion wise. Or choose one and rehome the other if additional houses is unfeasible. Eventually death will result from relentless pecking when you are not around to break it up.
Best regards.

Thank you I was hoping but figured separate was the option. Looks like I'll need more chickens

He's young, right? And large, and doing what cockerels do. BUT, you have little fragile Silkies, and it's not a good mix. Separation, or rehome somebody, before you have injured/ dead Silkies.
I have both standard and bantam roosters, and things work fine. I do not have Silkies, and my big birds have big flockmates, and the bantams have flockmates, so this situation isn't happening here.

Yep he's 14 weeks and he has a huge personality. Looks like I'll be building another run and coop, as well as looking for some ladies for him to hang out with.:yesss:
