Need Help Trapping Rats, Please

Don't get me wrong Redhen, I understand declaring war on the rats, I'm just saying that I wouldn't be losing any sleep if I got some squirrels as well. I have had some luck using the bucket traps before with mice and I can confirm that a 5 gallon bucket doesn't work with rats, you will need a garbage can.

It does require some common sense when using a gun. Like NOT shooting at a rat with a shotgun thats standing next to your pig, barn, husband, kid ect.

This is how they do it.

 yeah..those pups were loving that! If only my dogs were as smart..
So rats live underground? We have some holes in the yard...but I wasn't sure what was living in them..
I was thinking snake or mole or groundhog...and I didn't want to kill them either...

Yeah, I dont know why people get so paranoid about using Rat/Mouse poison. I have 8 poison stations in my pens, have had for years. From what I understand, poison (Warfarin and the like) is a humane way of killing rodents, they just get tired and go to sleep. Far more humane than throwing them in a bucket of water.
I have found dead rodents all over the place over the years. I have even seen roosters fighting over dead mice.
I have seen my dogs sniffing dead rats but never eat them, and as my dogs weigh over 80kg...or about...170lb each, I doubt very much that a small amount would hurt them if they did.
I have NEVER seen anything die from using poison except rodents.......thats in probably about 6 yrs when I built the bait stations.
The thing is too.......make sure the rodents can not remove the poison from the bait station.

Cheers...........The Dog
