Need help with calcium

Dragonlair is correct in talking about the need for Vitamin D to help with calcium absorbsion (sp?). But they also need phosphorous which they get from grains but not too many. I've heard that too much corn can actually decrease calcium absorbsion because it disrupts the calcium/Vit D/phosphorous balance.

Layer food is pretty complete in its calcium balance intake. Your hen may just not be able to absorb it readily.

One way to get a calcium boost in chickens is to grind up a Tums and give it to them. At the same time you could get a Vit D pill and add it to a gruel of their mash with the Tums. It seems to work.
