We have an old, filled-in cistern next to our milk house and barn that would be really cool as a duck pond. I've been planting millet and sorghum in there for the last few years with little success and my husband came up with the pond idea. It sounds good to me. I've never built a pond though. There's no place to drain the thing anymore and with ducks, that's absolutely necessary so I was thinking a pump? Ideas?

If you are wanting a full done proper pond, lowes has pond liners, plastic and fiber glass ones, as well as filters and pumps to keep it clean for a bit( but let's be honest filters with ducks won't last long unless you get a very expensive one) also any decor you put in the pond will probably be eaten by the ducks

If you just want a place for them to swim rubber maid makes water troughs for horses with drains on the bottom that can have a hose attach to it and be drained easily and it would stay pretty clean.

Thanks for the input. I ended up getting the large pond liner from Lowes. The hardest part was chiseling out a drain hole in the bottom of the cistern. But it works! I've emptied it and refilled it today for the first time and it drains pretty well. There was still a little sand in the bottom but as I finish the surrounding area, there should be less of that getting in there. The ducks seem to really enjoy it, spending most of their day in the water. The shallow end it about 6" and the deep end is at least 2 feet. Cost was under $100!
