Need help with Rabbit basics please.

Looks good! Are you giving him plenty of time to play outside of the pen and lots of toys?
Yes play time every day. He has 2 tunnels, a thing hanging on the side if his pen and some balls. The tunnels are a favorite. Also picking up his bowl and throwing it around in the middle of the night 🤭 little punk!

Wow, thank you very much! You obviously love your animals.

Walt isn't on wire, he's in a pen in the house. He has part tile right now because it's hot and he likes to lay on it because it's cool. The other half is carpeted though.

He's being neutered tomorrow and then we can look around for a friend after he heals.
Aww that’s awesome! Sounds amazing! Glad everything is going good for you! If you have any other questions though, I would love to help! And I didn’t mean to scare you with the vet haha, I hate expensive vet bills, they suck. Some of the problems I am able to fix at home if I catch it early enough like GI Stasis. But anyway, hope everything goes good with the neuter tomorrow, which I’m certain it will! Bunnies are awesome, and also a nice thing about them is they are clean if litter box trained! Much cleaner than poultry haha! Have fun though with your new companions!!! 🙂😃

No, lol, you didn't scare me about the vet bills. Thank you so much for the help, I've never had a bunny before so I'm not familiar with all the issues that might come up. Having someone to talk to about them is great!

I'm also on a rabbit forum but it's not as active as this one. I did a lot of research when I got Walt. He's here for his poop really, but I want him happy and healthy. I've grown attached :love He's a sweet little guy.

Hi all. I'm seriously considering adding a couple rabbits to my arrangement here. Not for food, for poop. I have a space to put them and know about housing, feeding etc.

I was wondering if any of you that keep them ever let them out of their run to cruise the yard for a while? Also, I don't want babies so they'll be spayed/neutered. Can I keep a male and female, or would it be better to have the same sex? I'd like to keep them together in a coop that I can easily convert to a safe place for them. It's 36 square feet of gound space and we can add a ramp and additional levels.

Thanks so much for your help!
You may already have rabbits by now, but if you don't, a male and a female who are BOTH spayed/neutered is your best bet to have friends.

@igorsMistress I just got rabbits today myself, FOR THE POOP! but thats why I have chickens. Although its cheaper to buy poop than it is to buy feed for both of them. I am wondering how your rabbits are doing in the heat where you live. I have had them before and when it goes over 85 degrees here rabbits struggle.
Hi there! I like the poop because it can go right into the garden from the litter box. Chicken poop takes a while!
I keep my bunny inside during the summer here, it's way too hot to be outside. We're under a heat warning all week, expecting 115+ before it's over.

Thank you! I have a spayed female and working on hubs to take the male she was bonded with and get him neutered.

I raised rabbits on a ranch in New Mexico in a 90feet by 120 foot "Warren. It had 8 feet buried fencing and bird netting on top and the whoke thing was constructed for the rabbits on the hillside facing an arroyo. We raised Flemish Giants and if you have ever read Watership Down it was shades of that. Rabbits form communities. With the proper amount of space they can live by the 100s in harmony with one another.

I was told the number one killer of domestic rabbits is "Broken Back Syndrome" caused by the weakened back muscles failing to support the rabbits spine and a sudden fright or awkward jump can cause the weight of the bunny to break it's own back.

Space. Rabbits need to run and play. They need to dig. The warren had burrow protection in the form of log grids the rabbits would dash under to escape perceived threats. Near the gate, where we brought in the food, the dominant buck and doe controlled. There was an area for young bachelors and young rabbits roamed safely in the entire warren. We sold Rabbits to tribes and others for meat etc each spring. But culling wasn't a high priority because the bunnies seemed to control their own population. A dead bunny I had to remove happened once or twice a year among 100 rabbits.

If you keep a pair of does they will fight. Bucks will fight. UNLESS you have enough space. Try building a Rabbit Kennel and bury the fencing 4ft. 6x10 ft should hold a couple of bunnies but you can always let them run around a clean yard if you don't use chemicals. But please, give them room to run in their pen.
