Hi everyone! Created this account just for this. My mums chicken had Ascites and I took her to the vet and she was drained. They said I might need some anti inflammatory medication in case she was inflamed (I forgot where she might need it for and I know nothing about chickens). She could stand yesterday after it since they drain 400mls from her and she's eating now but she won't walk or stand. She slept inside last night and I put her out after giving her medication and some soft food and water but she won't stand. What do I do? It's been an hour since I put her out and she's not standing. Please help!

Hi @Sandiest_cupid :frow Welcome To BYC

I'm sorry to hear about your hen.
What type of medication did they give you?

Sometimes even after draining they may have difficulties. You may want to bring her back in if she is with other chickens that might pick on her. Contacting your vet to express your concerns and letting them know that she is not doing well would be best.

Try to keep her hydrated, warm and comfortable. Keep us posted.

They gave me anti inflammatory and pain killer medication. I give it to her twice a day. They said to do it for 7 days and then check in.

Also, I keep her outside when it's nice and sunny but she's isolated from the others so they don't hurt her. She sleep in my room at night and when it's chilly.

When I took her into the vet yesterday, they said her poo showed that she hadn't been eating for days so she might still be weak. So I'm giving her fresh fruits and veggies and porridge. Hopefully it'll get her strength back up. Ill keep you guys posted.

Do you have a complete chicken feed?
If so that is probably the best thing for her to eat right now.
You could try wetting it some and mixing an egg or tuna fish in to it.
The wetting will help her take in fluids at the same time as eating.

Is complete chicken feed mixed grain? I ran out and only have pellets. But the vet said she would be able to get a lot of nutrients from the list of food she gave me.

Also she eats and drinks a good amount. He just needs help via me holding the bowl for her.

Can you share the list your vet gave you?

To me a complete chicken feed is a balanced, usually commercially made feed for chickens. Think going to a store and buying a bag of feed specifically for chickens...not the treat bad (the scratch) but the complete feed bag.

Some people do not ever use this type of feed and may just feed table scraps.
Or worse...only feed out scratch.

Mixed grains could be ok..depends on the grains.

Where are you located @Sandiest_cupid - are you in the US or another country?
What type of pellets do you have? If the pellets are something like layer pellets, you can make a wet mash out of those if they are fresh. Add some poultry vitamins to her water as well. A small amount of fresh fruit and veggies are good too - this gives them something to pick at and keeps the spirits up. Sounds like she is eating well - just make sure she is drinking.

Hi. I'm in Australia. I got the pellets from the vet, she's also eating oats and fresh fruit and veggies. Gave her blueberries yesterday and that shit is expensive I took her to the vet and they said the reason she wasn't walking was because she was immobile for a little over 24 hrs her left leg is kind of weak. They showed me some techniques to help her get some strength back in it. So far she's eating and drinking well and her medication is working. So I just have to help her get back on her feet.
