I need help with finding out what is happening to my chickens. In the last 2.5 years I've lost 5 to the same thing.
First they get lethargic, then they get pale, then they go blind. Then they die.
There is no mucus problems, no weird food, just pellets and romaine lettuce, and red tomatoes from my organic garden. Sometimes romaine lettuce from the store. They do get scratch a few times a week. Fresh water every day.
They do get to free range our non-chemical back yard about once a week.

Pigeons are able to get in their pen.

I've tried oregano in their food. I've tried Corid treatments. I've de-wormed them.
But about every 3 months one of them will get lethargic and end up dying. They are from 2 to 1 year old.
I'm at a loss.
No spots on combs. And no eye swelling. The pupils are dialated after they go blind. With the red streaks in the brown iris. this happens in both eyes. All times of the year. First one was in August, one just passed on Friday. Pretty sure had one pass last June.

Let me add there is no sneezing, or discharge from eyes or nostrils. No gasping for air. Poop is fine until the very end.

What's poop look like at end? Have you ever shipped one off to have an autopsy . I would do the next time one dies.
At the end its green and runny. Their crops always feel normal. They do find the feed its just a slow peck and search process. But at the end with the runny green poo they just have a watery crop.
Also no lice/mites
I haven’t shipped but will next time it happens.

Yeah I definitely would ship one of next time if it's the same symptoms

I agree with getting a necropsy done. Unfortunately there’s no way to actually diagnose just on symptoms alone, you’ll need to get a bird testing by a necropsy to find the answers that can be causing all of this. There is another strain of the Marek’s Disease Virus that can cause blindness and other eye issues (Ocular Marek’s Disease). I’ve also seen and read that Avian Leukosis Virus (ALV), can also cause the symptoms that you’re mentioning.

Thanks everyone. I'm thinking it's either Mareks or its cousin... LYMPHOID LEUKOSIS. Either way, next time one passes I'll get a necroposy done. We think we know which chicken is the carrier, she's been around the longest and we had her when we got 2 pullets from a private seller . The 2 pullets died about a month after we got them...I think they brought it in. Should I separate the suspected carrier? If so...what can I put in with her? A duck? A rabbit? She's going to need some kind of company in the other coop. I can't cull her...she's one of our OGs (the other 3 we got with her died..)
