Hi,
Cedar shavings are not good for chickens because of the fumes from the oils in the wood. It can make them sick. Pine shavings are fine. If you are cleaning often enough, or just turning the litter it should not smell. The chickens will eat any bugs that come around.

Hi! You will love them! Instead of cutting the side out of your boxes, open them up at the seams then tape them back together as one large box. Instead of having 2 2x2 boxes, you will have 1 4x4 box, doubling their space and cutting down your electric bill, you will only need 1 heat lamp. I put paper towels on top of my pine shavings for the first few days. Then after that I put the waterer on a brick to keep some of the shavings out of it. I use the mason jar feeders and waterers. Have fun!
