need high quality, high calorie recipes

We took a boy to boy scout camp who also is small for his age/size. We had to give him 8 glass of whole milk a day. That is what his dietician prescribed.

Back when I had to eat to keep my weight up (boy, do I miss those days) I drank a lot of Carnation Instant Breakfasts with my meals. A coworker was having trouble gaining weight during her pregnancy and her doctor recommended these for her, as well. It has been a while, but I did prefer the chocolate.

Well, I wonder if you can build on his love of peanut butter with foods like chicken or pork satay.

There are lots of calories the in the traditional recipes, and a double dose of proetein too (legumes and meat.)

And for good old american food there's nothig like homemade mac and cheese. I have a terrific recipe (calorie bomb, but yummy!) I'd be happy to PM to you.

On the TV show Good Eats, Alton Brown makes homemade energy bars that look like exactly what you need. something high calorie, but without weird fats, and preservatives.

Every recipe from him that I have tried has been tasty and not difficult to make. These would probably be good snack foods for your son.

For meals things like beef stew and biscuits, stroganoff, homemade pizza, enchiladas, casseroles, etc would be good. Anything that is very high calorie is also likely to be high fat, but filling foods that are easy to eat might work.

I've got a recipe for 'Ranger Cookies'. They're a real high energy, tasty snack used for things like hiking and such, when you want to pack in as much protein as possible. PM me if you want the recipe.

Good luck finding more!!

This will not work for everyone.....BUT it did work for my nephew...ADHD and beyond! http://www.feingold.org/ My sister followed this with full commitment and it really worked well for them. Might be worth incorporating some of his ideas with what you learn from your doc and others who have experience! Good Luck!

I make a Sprinkle Bar cookie that can be easily modified to up the nutrition. It is very high fat, but that isn't much of a concern here.

Sprinkle Bars

1/2 c butter or margarine
1c graham cracker crumbs
1 (8 ounce) package dried mixed fruit, chopped
1 cup grated coconut (I use unsweetened)
1 cup chopped nuts
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk

Preheat oven to 325*. Melt butter in a 9x13 inch baking pan. Layer crumbs, fruit, coconut and nuts in pan. Press down lightly with the palm of hand. Pur milk evenly over thetop of layer. Bake until golden bround, 30-40 minutes. Cut into bars while slightly warm.

This recipe can be easily varied. I make a variation with 1 cup dried cherries instead of the mixed dried fruit, 1 (4 ounce) can pineapple tidbits, well drained; and 3/4 cup of mini chocolate chips with all the other ingredients.

This is easy and kids love it!

For years I worked in a nursing home. Many of the patients there need to gain weight or to be prevented from loosing more weight. They got 'snacks' 2 - 3 times a day in the form of ensure.

For a child pediasure is the equivalent. An entire meal's worth of nutrients.

You can use those between meals to make high calorie milk shakes flavored with real fruit and yogurt.

You can pack alot of calories into those shakes.

Salmon is a food that is supposed to be a super food for ADD ADHD. Salmon doesn't taste much different then Tuna, although I think tuna is not as good- to fishy. But you can make tuna chowder with 1/2 and 1/2 - anyone want the recipe hollar, its just fish chowder with salmon, or a salmon pie, lots of great foods - for us in moderation but its a great one if your little guy likes it.
Good luck folks, its so difficult to gain as it is for some of us to loose. BTW- Herbalife has a Shake for children for nutrition and mixed with foods, it would be a great weight gaining food.
