when I am selling "meat" I am a trapper and I sell meat off my trappers license through trapping season so I already have customers lined up because of this , but to sell quail "meat" I do like JJ suggested and just sell them live so no inspection for me. sorry about the misunderstanding here in Va. to become NPIPED the inspectors come to your farm. does maine have different size slaughter houses? I mean is there a such thing as a backyard slaughter house ? I do a lot of dressing game and such here for family and friends .

You can slaughter your own animals for your own use I think but don't quote me. You can't slaughter for anyone else, family or not, free or not unless you have a state certified slaughter facility on your farm..... So... I think mostly I'll sell adult birds for the good ole' maine'ahs to butcher themselves but for those that are queasy and don't like to do it and for restaurants I need to go through a certified slaughter house. I hope that made sense. No one did it before now but I think I've poked the fire a little and getting something going so hopefully as more people breed quail the prices and regulations will hopefully go down. Not going to hold my breath.

I'm surprised they let us sell eggs. As long as I have less then 3000 laying hens then I can sell eggs but still all kinds of regulations there. lol. If I have over 3000 I need a license but I don't think I'll ever have that many. 50 is good. The only thing you have to watch out for his homeowners insurance and liability insurance. (Word of mouth is wonderful).

When I say your own use..... I'm talking the state of Maine only..... All states vary. I want to move to the alps or something. lol. So anyways I guess this problem is resolved. For all you Mainers you now have a way to legally sell quail meat. (I'm sure many do it for friends and relatives without getting certification and I have no problem even though it's illegal *rolls eyes* so don't tell me if you do but.... if you want to sell to restaurants here's how and good luck.)
