Need ideas!

Well, I have talked to my dad about it more, and we're thinking we might go into raising cattle together (he'll take care of the financials, I'll take care of the cows) I do have a very good support system to help me on this, so that's good, and it'll be about a year before we actually get started, so that gives me time to be 100% sure and at least keep my eye out for other opportunities. Now, the reason I am so against being a vet or working in a veterinarian office, is because of how much sad things I'd be dealing with, I know as a farmer (or if I raised dogs or anything to with animals really) that there can be hardships, like losing a good cow, losing money, having a dog die, having to cull your entire flock of chickens, and so on, but I also know that a large majority of the time, things will run smoothly, ill get eggs everyday, I'll have calves on the ground every year, etc., working in a vet clinic I know id see so many sick animals come in, and lose animals while operating on them, and put animals to sleep, and see animals come in that have been mistreated, at least one or all of these things probably EVERY day, and I can't handle that every day of my life just so I can make more money. I'd rather run a farm and deal with a few hardships a year and work 16 hours a day 7 days a week and be happy.

What you just said sounds a lot better. A good plan. It is understandable why you don't want to get into vet medicine. I could be heartbreaking so see illness, sickness, injury day after day. With the support system you have (and you are very lucky to have) you will do very well.

Do think about something you would like to do if you find you need to go to work. Learn financials so you can take over the business some day and use those skills, if need be, if you have no choice to find employment. I'm surrounded by cattle farmers (literally). All of my neighbors have to work in addition to raising cattle. One's a carpenter with his own business, one works in a factory, another works in an office, two are retired but collect social security and pensions, and another but I'm actually not sure of his occupation (management somewhere).

If cattle is what you decide to do then go for it. Absolutely. With family around you, helping you, teaching you, you can't go wrong.

My gr.niece went to college, moved to New York, had a good job with a tv station. Chucked it all and decided to be a dog walker. Lots of eyes rolled at that, she seems content with it and doesn't have much expense involved. But she really should have some kind of insurance in case, something happens to any of the dogs, etc. She does dog sitting as well. Nowadays people have to be much more cautious about strangers. She even walks dogs in central park. -

I used to show dogs,(started at 12) groom dogs, write for dog magazines etc. etc. I loved the dog part, hated the people part. My family desperately wanted me to fail, so I would come to my senses. Gosh, I never did. But I can say it took a lot longer to build up a bank account, than it was to empty it on necessities.

Keep researching and learning about cattle raising. Learn all you can.
Good for you. Do what you love and love what you do. Everyone gets to the tough points but if you love what you are doing you will make it through no matter what. Good luck!

Yes I really want to get into all the farming stuff, especially cattle, I even know what kind I want already. I'm trying to figure out how to do everything so I won't end up broke, but I think I know enough farmers to help me. I've been at my grandparents tonight and I've been hounding my grandpa with questions, I think he might be annoyed LOL but I'm sure I'll get it all figured out! And I'll start looking for a little job in my town soon to help things along

@BlessedCountry6 I would like to get Murray grey heifers! I'm just not sure where to find someone near me that sells them, I don't hear of many people in Missouri keeping them. And then I'll breed them to my grandpas bull, he just got a new one, I can't remember if he's angus or limousine though

Sorry for no reply Abby. I got really sick. Finally feeling a big more normal.
Those grays are so beautiful and gray is my fav color. We have two Texas Longhorns. We love them for their ease in care and birth. We are wanting to get a charlais to cross with because of their stalky rich meat but because of their ease in birth too. There are some down the road and we r going to talk with the farmer about getting a calf. The babies were so tiny but they grew fast! We are waiting for our bull and cow to pop us out a baby before we add to our herd. I tried to post a pic but it's not working. I'll try again in a new reply.
