need inexpensive fencing/run ideas for coop

It isn't my coop, but it gets the point across. You can see how the wire goes under the dirt. BTW, I didn't use chicken wire. I went with the hardware cloth.

I am planning on using 1"x2" welded wire for the lower part of my run fence rather than 1/2" hardware cloth. I think it should be sufficient, but I am curious as to why this is not suggested. Is it because it is uncommon or even those small holes are considered too big?
 
I think that 1"X2" welded wire leaves holes that are too big. Foxes and other critters can reach in and even if they can't manage to drag a chicken out, they can really do some damage.

When I was a kid we had a coop where opossums would try to get our birds. One night they reached in and decapitated five of them. Couldn't eat them, just killed them. What a mess.

... and rats. they can get in a 1" hole. Snakes too.
