Need input! Teen with Thyroid issues, update

hi there, sounds like what you described is hypothyroidism (underactive). i have that too. mine was diagnosed when i was 15, i am now 33. the hardest part at the beginning is figuring out the right dosage. i had to try out different strengths, then go in for bloodwork, as its a delicate balance to get it exactly right. but now its just routine, i take my synthroid every day and i'm fine. its not as bad as it sounds and she should be good as new once they figure out what dosages she needs.

no worries, all the best to you and your DD.

I'm with you on that!
Telling her she'll HAVE to have needles for the next while is NOT going to go over well.

Knowing why she's sleeping through classes and failing on a massive level is the only relief in all of this, so far. I finally have an answer for her concerned teachers as to WHY.
(she's a very smart kid - not just my opinion - her teachers say that too)

Hey , I sent you a PM. Just found the thread. Hang in there! I think you are on your way to getting her the right treatment. Just get a good endocronologist. Please keep me posted on everything! It will be ok.

I HATE to see young people taking any perscription drugs. Hopefully the information below can help her body repair itself and or reduce the amount of drugs she takes.

As others have posted I am providing this for your information and I am NOT diagnosing or prescribing anything! Confirm any information with your Doctor!!

The thyroid hormone thyroxine is made from the amino acid tyrosine. The enzyme that converts one to the other is dependent on iodine, zinc, and selenium. a lack of either tyrosine or iodine, zinc, or selenium can reduce thyroxine levels. However, an underactive thyroid, which can cause symptoms like weight gain, mental and physical lethargy, constipation, and skin problems, is quite common. Many people suspected of haviing thyroid problems have borderline "normal" thyroxine levels but experiance amazing health transformations after taking a low dose of thyroxine. Some people develop underactive thyroids because their body is destroying their thyroxine. These people test positive for "antithyroid antibodies." This is often due to a glutin allergy. the immune system seems to become hypersensitive to a food and attacks thyroid tissue by mistake. I recommend testing for allergies as well as antithyroid antibodies.

If I were in your position I would change her diet to include the following :
1. Eat at least 1 heaping tablespoon per day of nuts and seeds and or 1 tablespoon of cold pressed seed oil (extra virgin olive oil will work too)
2. eat 2 servings of beans, lintils, puinona, tofu(soy), or "seed type" vegetables per day.
3. Eat 3 pieces of fruit per day like apples, pears, bananas, berries, melon or citrus fruit.
4. 4 servings per day, WHOLE grains like rice, millet, rhy, oats, wheat, corn, quinoa, or WHOLE GRAIN breads or pasta.
5. 5 servings a day of dark green, leafy, and root veggies like watercress, carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli, spinach, green beans, peas, and peppers.
6. 6 glasses of water per day, and diluted juices or herbal or fruit teas.
7. raw, organic, whole food as much as possible.
8. supplement high quality multi vitamin and minerals vitamin C and essential omega-3 and omega-6 fats every day.(more below)
9. avoid fried, burnt, browned foods, hydrogenated fat and animal fat like the plague.
10 avoid any form of sugar and refined high processed foods with chemical additives, minimize alcohol (trust me on this one), coffee, and tea (with caffine) or any other "stimulants"

Two high quality miltivitamins a day (one taken at breakfast and one at lunch) that contain at least 5,000 IU of A, 200 IU of D, 150 IU of E, 250 mg of C, 25 mg each of B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6, 10 mcg(micrograms) of B12, and 50 mcg of folic acid and biotin.

Two high quality multi mineral a day (one taken between lunch and dinner and one just before bed time) that contains at least; 150 mg calcium, 75 mg magnesium, 10 mg of iron, 10 mg of zinc, 2.5 mg of manganese, 20 mcg of chromium, 25 mcg of selenium, and ideally som molybdenum, vanadium, and boron.

PLUS!!!

600 IU vitamin E

two 1,000 mg vitamin C with bioflavnoids per day taken at breakfast and lunch.

you can't find vitamins with all that good stuff all in one pill. It's physically impossible so you'll have to take three or four separate ones to get what she needs.

DONT take the vitamins at night because they will keep her up and loose sleep.
Dont take just one vitamin without taking a good multi vitamin / multi mineral as many vitamins and minerals depend on each other to work properly.

Don't take the minerals with food, stomach acids deter absorbtion.

I hope she feels better SOON!

I have a thyroid problem myself. It isnt so bad you have to take a pill evry day for the rest of your life but other than that its not so much of a hassle. The tiredness will level out once shes on medication. Thats how I found out I had it i was so tired all the time. I also gained weight suddenly but that leveled out also. Tell your daughter no biggy Hope she is oK Micki

I'm hypothyroid and I'll be on meds til I'm pushing up daisies...
But that's fine...It will take them a while to get the dosage straightened out, but once it's done they might have to take blood once a year.

I had to have my thyroid "zapped" because it wasn't working at all...
I had the never ending sleepies, weight gain, the whole shooting match...it can even mess up your periods.

It's been so long, seismic, I don't remember...I've heard that head boinks can cause your endocrine system to be all messed up and this started after I went through the windshield in a car crash.

That's very good information...
When I'd go to the market, I'd go right for the liver and spinach...
