I was really excited, about to get into having a back yard chicken coup and went to check out at Mcmurrary and see there is a 25 chick minimum. I'm just trying to start a hobby here, not a farm. Anyone know of a good online source or local in the Bergen county NJ area. Looking for day old Rhode Island Reds.

I know you can order smaller amounts from Ideal because I have ordered from them myself. There is also My Pet Chicken that allows smaller orders. Maybe one of those might have what you want.

I would also say Ideal. With Ideal, they have a $25.00 minimum, not a 25 bird. Their shipping for a small order is not too bad either.
You would get 10 chicks. You can sell the 5 chicks you don't want.

I ordered from My Pet Chicken, but can't say I am happy. I am not sure what they did with my order. So, I ordered this last time
from Ideal.

Even if you gave away the 5 extras, it also might be less. Shipping for under a certain number of chicks is really high
for some hatcheries . Probably because of putting heating pads in and that they send them Express.

Depending on what breeds you are looking for, try here:

chickenscratchpoultry.com

I already had around 40 in my flock but wanted to add a few more that lay the blue/green/dark brown eggs so I ordered 9 from these people. They are very nice and great to do business with. I also ended up buying two Lavender Orpingtons from them. Who could pass up purple chickens!!

You could also try craigslist in your area if it is strong. I see chicks up all the time, or local feed stores. I did not want 25 either but I could not see ordering 10 chicks and paying almost the same price..so I have just decided to go larger or sell off the rest. I just could not find what I wanted close enough to me so I ordered from Meyer.

I just ordered from chickensforbackyards.com, their minimum is three and they have a really good assortment to choose from. They are rather new but I have heard nothing but good things from them so far. I will get mine in May. Like you, I only needed three, but somehow ended up ordering four (I think it's that chicken math thing everyone here talks about!)

Good luck!

A friend of mine ordered from Meyer. She said she was pleased with them. Just thought I'd chime in. I'm getting my new chicks at the end of the month from a feed store - just cause they have been really helpful and I wanted to give them my business.

The New Jersey feed stores have a 6 chick minimum. Not sure if you have any tractor supply stores or other feed stores (like Agway or such), but they are having "chick days" until around May. Not sure on the RIR's though, the stores by me get random deliveries of chicks all month.
