Need some brooder info weird idea

I also have a old oven metal tray/ rack with bars XD but 1 i don't want it to get too hot and melt the tub while sitting on top of it and o.o 2 when do they start jumping cuz the gaps are wide enough for a tiny button to just walk through if it was sideways

Okay so button quail is due anyday and for the brooder i was wondering if after i cut a hole in the top of the plastic tub can i use the screen off a window to cover the hole so it doesn't jump out and so my cousins cat can't just some how get to it and jump in will this work cuz ill be having the heat lamp hanging in the air above it or will it some how melt it wich i don't think it would but if some one has experience doing this let me know if not what things around the house can i use im broke till sunday and there day 16 hatch day is Saturday

First if you introduce the cat to your birds they will get used to them and not eat them mine all get along
Second that bulb will melt the tote you need a horse/cattle water bin or wood brooder i used to use a tortoise hutch but i found a shipping crate that i use now i dont have any pics but will take some tomorrow and post them

I cover my brooder with 1/2" hardware cloth and either hang the heat inside or on top, depending on what temperature they need.

Are you using this type of bulb ? In that plastic tote ? Curious since someone just said it will melt it and i think it was u who once told me they use this type of bulb o.o/

What did u use for ur hole at the top floorcandy

It’s just hardware cloth, the front is a rodent cage panel.

Window screen over the hole is a very good idea. Good thinking!

Will it melt? I do not think so.

If you want to be really sure, you can test it: just set up the brooder, plug in the heat lamp, and check back in a while to see what happened. Do it when you're home and awake, and if you're really concerned--put it in the middle of a concrete floor (like a garage) or a bare/fireproof space (like a driveway.) You will know for sure in a few hours' time!

(Sometimes testing things is the easiest way to know, if no-one else knows the answer.)

Also be sure to put something underneath in case it melts! We learned the hard way using an old baby gate in a pinch one night when we had to seperate a chick that had been beat up pretty bad from its flock mates. Luckily we were watching and caught it before it dropped into the brooder.

An old towel cut into rags, could be used between the plastic and metal to keep it from melting.

Plastic bins do not melt until the temperature is already too hot for baby birds. So it should not melt the bottom of the brooder (where the quail chicks will be.)

Because the heat lamp will be closer to the top and upper sides, they will be hotter, and it has a bigger chance of melting them. I do not know if it will, just that if anything melts, it would be the parts close to the heat.

I really think you should just set it up and see. If it does melt part of the top of the tub, change the setup a bit to avoid a repeat, and patch the hole with a piece of screen.

Yes, that it what I use. I am careful to make sure that it doesn't touch the plastic.
