I have three ducklings, two pekins and a rouen.

They are about 2 weeks old. I would like to eventually get them to accept a diaper harness (the ones from indoorducks.com look really nice). I would assume it is better to get them used to it when they are little, but I don't really want to spend the money on three juvenile AND adult harnesses (I'm guessing by their growth that they will be out of the baby sizes before I could get one). Do you think I could get them used to it by buying one juvenile harness and using it on them each in for a little while and then get them all adult ones? Or has anyone had luck getting an adult to accept a harness? They will not be indoor ducks, but I would like to be able to let them play inside sometimes. If they really don't like it then I won't order adult harnesses and be resigned to letting them only wander where the ducky poo can be wiped!

I'd say don't buy them. There is a lot of controversial out there, and some come from avian veterinarians. One thing is for clear you cannot have them in it for extended time or they get inflammation from the fecal matter. Then they also need extended time without it, plus bathing etc. Well you know that one already and you like the idea of getting them in occasionally. The biggest issue is breathing. The harness can put pressure onto them and make it harder for them. That is what I've heard from the vets. I know you see pictures of ducks in diapers, and they have been raised with it so they are used to it. Starting it later will be no fun for you or the duck. I'd say as cute and tempting as the idea is, it is not duck friendly at all. I know I will be slaughtered for saying this by those that swear by it. I do have an 18 gallon rope tub with a towel in it I use for the occasional indoor use. I currently use it for a gosling, so he hang around in the living room and watch TV with us, besides being in the brooder. He is a little bit over 3 weeks old and it is wet and cold (snowed today) outdoors so he is still living in the house. He will be out as soon as weather permits. We usually have family time outside on the back deck with our ducks, dogs, etc. Most of the diapers are pricey too and then is the growing size issue. Perhaps a large bed sheet will do the trick.
