Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

Mine are K-1, but it is a small private school and everyone, teachers and admins as well stop in to see how the hatch is going!. I teach at a school for learning different kids. My kids are looking up different breeds and sharing pictures and facts with class. We learn about the life cycle and where food comes from. This year it is big excitement that we are hatching some eggs from last years chicks!We create a chart of eggs and track which eggs hatch and what color chick hatches from each egg. We also read the thermometer and track temps. Then of course they help set up the chicks habitat and care for them! An older class is partaking this year as well, and will raise half the chicks when they hatch!!

I set 8 black-tailed white japanese bantam eggs today. Crossing my fingers for a decent hatch! If I get two chicks grown to maturity and one of them has the short legs called for by SQ standards, I'll be *super super* happy.

Do you all candle your shipped eggs before they go into the incubator? I figured I would just do it at day 7 or so...but I have read that you should candle before they go in to check for cracks....wondering if I messed up!

My friend's sis that sent the eggs admonished us to not candle unless absolutely necessary--she thinks it decreases hatch rates.

I have a staggered hatch. I have 20 Showgirl eggs due on April 26th and 29 Lavender silkie eggs due the 27th. That's 49 eggs!

This will be my biggest hatch, ever. And I'm trying out my Lab incubator on 8 off them.

Before I finished the sentence, I had a vision of a Black Labrador Retriever trying to nestle some eggs, then I snapped out of it...must be still sleepy

Is this a microbiology lab or something? I guess you'd hand turn when you're at work? What are you going to do on the weekends or are you a work-a-holic?

I have a hatch buddy who got the same breed's eggs from the same breeder....AND...we are only 1 day different on hatch days! My 24 English Orpington/American Orpington eggs went in on the evening of the 7th so due date is April 28! Hers will be on the 29th.
This is my 2nd hatch and my first hatch resulted in 8 out of 13 eggs being fertile and 6 out of those hatching! I debated candling prior to setting the eggs this time...I did not the last hatch and both batches of eggs were shipped. I am going to candle on day 7 or 10 and then again on day 18 prior to lockdown. My friend is candling on day 4 to mark the air cell so that the next time she candles she can see if the air cell is bigger...a great idea if you plan on candling 2-3 times!!

My Silkie-X weren't hard to hatch at all; I'm just now trying pure Silkies. These are shipped eggs, so I expect a bit of loss on them. If I get one rooster and one hen out of the 14 eggs, I will be thrilled. If I get just one, I'm hoping for a rooster. More chances to get the characteristics that I want, for my Silkie project, if I get a roo. The Silkies are due to hatch a day or two before Easter, so I'll be posting the results on Mahonri's thread.

I candled a few. I am trying to learn what to look for. I found one with cracks. I taped it and will watch and smell very carefully
