Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

I might be getting bantam eggs on that day so why not

Time to show off the babies! So out of 22 barnyard mix eggs 15 hatched and I am leaving the others in the bator just in case. On my silkie (shipped eggs) I started with 22, had to toss 14 before lockdown. That left 8 in the incubator. 5 hatched, 2 quit, and one is still in the incubator - just in case.

I am still very excited about my hatch. First time incubating so I don't think I did too bad. They are adorable. I was supposed to give away all but the silkies but it's going to be hard to part with them. Especially when the lady that wants them may not be giving them the best home. Gosh, it's easy to get attached.

Thanks dretd! Your probably right on the way you figure it, but it just doesn't seem right when there are so many that may be infertile. I pulled 20 that weren't fertile on day 18. Why should our hatch rate include something that we have no control over? Ok, 62% I guess is ok.

Could be better.

I have one little bantam that was pipped and had a pretty decent hole, but wasn't making progress. This was after all the others hatched. I had to help him out and it doesn't look like he is going to make it. His feet are all curled up(I put band aids to flatten them out) and he keeps kicking his legs straight out. And just laying there. We'll see.

I have 3 out of 12 White Marans. They are so tiny with little feathers on there feet. Maybe two more look like they will hatch.

Question for yall....

I have a chick. It's a white silkie and there is something wrong with it. It seems alert and looks perfect but it cannot stay upright. It's little head starts leaning back and it flips over onto it's back where it will lie until I come by and flip it back over.

Then it sits there until it flips itself over or another chick comes by and flips it over.

It seems healthy and beautiful other than that. I just don't see how it will ever be able to eat or drink it it can't walk. Has anyone ever seen a chick do this before? It was born last night so it has been out of the shell for about 18 hours. I hope it improves.

It has "wryneck" and may get worse if you don't get it some vitamin supplements. Do a 'wryneck" search on Byc and they will tell you what to do to help it. I had to "cull" one that I had but many are saved.

I can't believe my homemade incubator worked! After weeks of stressing and deciding this was a big mistake to try, sure it wasn't working...well..I'm glad I did try because now there are 15 little fluffballs chirping in my livingroom. Mostly silkies and cochins - pictures here at my blog , I'd love your opinion on if I got the breeds right seeing as they were eggs given to me with a few extra's thrown in...

cheers,
melissa
