Since Dominiques look so much like barred rocks I'd say they were Dominiques! Or at least a cross of some sort. I have a lot of barred rocks and that is what they looked like when they were little. Maybe a little more white on the heads but pretty much the same! And of course [IMG]

I would guess barred rock for yellow legged babies, and dominique for the others...what kind of combs do they have? Can you post upclose pics of the combs?

I have three BCM chicks, and none of them had yellow legs when they were little. They all had white/gray legs with feathering. I have a pic of my babies when they were a bit older than the ones in your pics.

note the leg feathering, the single comb, and the gray wash to the legs. As little fluffies, they were black with white bellies. One of them had no apparent leg feathering, but has since developed some. Can you get a shot of your chick's legs and combs?

This post should be in the "what breed or gender am I?" section. There are several people who frequent that forum who are basically experts for sexing and breed questions.

Barred rocks will have single combs while dominiques will have rose combs. The white and reddish/brown ones are obviously something else.

If the "backyard chicken farmer" doesn't know what they have and "just hatched out a bunch of chicks", it's very likely that all of your chicks are barnyard mixes. This means that they *might* have characteristics of one breed, but they probably won't be pure and sexing may be more difficult depending on the mixes and dominant genes. You'll want to give them as long as possible before sending anyone to the freezer.

I see barring and possibly australorp coloring in the chicks. It will be much easier to tell even in just a couple weeks.

Probably barnyard mixes given the circumstances -- a whole bunch of black ones, a red, and a white. FWIW, barred birds have white spots on the top of their heads as chicks.
