Need some help with rescued chick - foot/leg swollen & purple

I am so excited to be getting Silkies this spring, never had them before so lurking on the silkie thread trying to learn all I can.

Silkies are sweeties. I love them, my cochins and my Seramas. Well, I love all my chickens lol but they are my favorites for personality.

I thought I'd share some photos of Sonya. She is doing much better! Excuse the messy cage - I came home to clean her and she hasn't stopped eating yet!

She uses her foot to steady her while she is at the bowl and leans against the side of the cage. She can eat crumbles but prefers her mash - crumbles and baby bird formula - for now.

I think her foot looks so much better!

She is just the sweetest thing - it looks like she has a foot up to steady herself at the bar - probably wants to kick back a few margarita's now that she is feeling better. You are quite a nurse. Do you find homes for your rescues or keep them all? I'm sure we would all love to see her as she grows up. Your posts and photos have really brightened my day.

Oh she definitely is! I love to hear her sing while she eats. It really warms my heart because I know she feels good and is happy despite the pain she probably has in the foot. She cries when I'm not in the room and always comes hopping over when I open the door. She really is the sweetest little thing. I wonder if she doesn't like other chicks because of what they did to her in the box? I don't know how extensive chicken minds are but maybe she has a little fear.

She is a Golden Sex Link.

Mummz - I would think that looking at the color of the leg, she has something broken. That is the kind of bruising you would see with broken bones. I am sure it is hard to see if there is a break because she is so small. I don't know how you would fix her, necessarily though. I have made toe straighteners out of pipe cleaners and they work absolutely perfect. Do you think one might work on her foot and leg, like a splint? For the toe straightening, I use one consecutive length of pipe cleaner, starting at the back of the foot, double it back at the end of each toe and secure each toe on it with bandaging tape. I would then continue on up to the hock (first joint on the leg) and double back to end at the back of the foot again, Maybe even give her an additional toe out of the pipe cleaner to help her with her balancing. I would try a half a drop of baby Tylenol before aspirin since aspirin is a blood thinner and you don't want to cause her problems with having her blood thinned, it needs to be able to clot properly for healing purposes, and where there is bruising there was bleeding.
I would give that a try.

Good luck.

I will definitely keep the photos coming as she grows. I keep all of them mainly because I have never ran across anyone else who might want to take them on. I have a spraddle leg Bantam EE hen, a blind OEGB hen, a cross beak Buff Laced Polish hen, Barred Rock hen with neurological issues (she was a star gazer as a baby) and a one-eyed cross beak RIR rooster named Jack

That is something I would enjoy doing. We don't have a feed store or Tractor supply close to us so I can't see that I would have the opportunity but so thankful there are people like you who do have opportunity and help these little ones have a chance.. I can't even go into TRS when they have the little chicks and ducks, good thing they are 25 miles away... keep up the great work ZooMummzy

I'm glad to hear that she is eating! Are you sure that the swelling isn't getting worse though? When I look at her first pics that you posted compared to these last pics, to me it appears that there is more swelling. Maybe it's just the camera "adding 10 lbs" so to speak, or maybe it's just a bad angle?

I had quite the scare this morning; I don't think I'm breathing normally yet! I woke up and checked on Sonya only to find her sprawled and STUCK to her food bowl! At first I thought she had died but then I see her little legs kicking. I rushed her to the bathroom, bowl and all and bathed her quickly. Her crop was hard as a rock (too much food? no water?) She was still not moving much even with the blow dryer on her but I got her to drink some water and while she was, my Seramas started talking to her. She started talking back and opened her eyes. Her crop is softer and smaller now and she is still talking. She is also moving around the cage again but seems very tired. I have no idea how long she was stuck in her food. Thankfully it wasn't too far out of the light so she didn't get cold but she went without water the whole time. I never ever thought this would happen. I have marbles in her water so in case she would fall in there but I never thought she would "drown" in her food bowl! No more wet mash in that bowl! I think we are going to switch to soften crumbles with some egg today. I have no idea how many lives this chick has but she's a little fighter!
