we three hens, 4-5 mths old. We are hoping they will start laying eggs soon, if not they go back to the place we got them from!!! This winter has been pretty cold for us in the South, so we purchased a heat lamp for the coop. The hens, Minnie, Daisy, Henrietta love it. Our question or concern is with the light on all night does this hinder them from laying eggs once they start? We have made their nesting boxes, so far they seem to ignore it.

I think they are still on the young side for laying.....Mine have never started laying before 6 mo old a couple into 7 mo. The light shouldn't affect them...they are just on the young side .

Good luck!

Some breeds don't start until later. Two of the breeds that I have didn't start until 10 months old. Production breeds start sooner then most. Give it time!

From what I've read, the light shouldn't prevent them from laying. In fact, it might cause them to start earlier in the year than they would without it. White lights left on all night can cause stress and picking at each other, though. Red lights are supposed to be easier on them. Any light can be a fire hazard.
