Need some medical advice....

Last week I bought 3 coturnix babies from the flea market. The guy I bought them from had put these 3, 4 week olds in with full grown bobs. Needless to say this one little guy has gotten beaten up pretty good. I had noticed he was not walking very well and when I got him home and cleaned the poop from his feet to get a look at what was going on, one of his toes looked like it was almost severed down to the bone. I cleaned it the best I could and tried to bandage it with antibiotic ointment and a wrap. Needless to say this did not stay on very long. I have been giving him Baytril (sp?) suspension twice a day but he his getting wise to every thing I try to do to get his mouth open. I clean his feet at least once a day and I have been putting Silvadene cream on after each wash. His toe does not look like it is getting any better after a week and now it looks swollen and bruised. Is there anything else I can try before I take him to a vet? He is eating and drinking well but for obvious reasons is not getting around really well.

IME---Coturnix heal very well. Baytril is a lil heavy handed for traumatic injuries, and if given incorrectly or un-necessarily can cause kidney failure. Do you have any bluecote (woundkote, etc..) ? i usually clean the injury and spray the area with bluecote daily. Unless your getting frank purulent discharge/ drainage from the wound i wouldnt do any antibiotics. You can certainly suppliment with vit/minerals in the water to aid in healing and a good gamebird starter with a high protien content helps. i don't try to bandage wnds for reasons you have already seen 1st hand

The bird may loose the toe, and still live a full functioning life. If this is the case it will hobble around until it does loose the appendage and then the remaining wnd should heal and it will be fine. Is it in general community now or isolation? I do pull all injured players and place them in an infirmary pen/ cage to allow for healing and it help prevent further abuse from cagemates as well as allows for a more aseptic environment to help prevent infection and promote healing

There is no discharge or drainage from the wound, just slightly swollen and bruised. I will stop the Baytril and I will make a trip to the feed store and get a bottle of bluecoat. I have been putting vit/minerals in the water. I forgot that in my first post. He is in a large fish tank in my living room with his two sisters (they are to small to go into general) and it gets cleaned twice a day. I just feel sorry for him the way he hobbles around.

the science there is definately interesting. But quite cost prohibitive. Think I'm going to have To stick with woundkote as the cogentin blue ( the reason its blueish purple) basically does the same thing as vetricin for about 25% of the cost. The product looks promising, hopefully it will come down in price in the future.
 
I was thinking that myself. I have already bought the woundkote but have kept this information to look into a bit more. I will ask my vet about it next time I take one of my parrots in for a nail trim. If it really works that great I need to have it around here for more than just my birds.
 
The bottle says it is also effective against yeast infections. I am going to try it in dogs' ears if I see them scratching to see if it works on that. The vet supply girl just RAVED about the product. It also says it is effective against MRSA, and who knows what all else. Looks and feels just like water when you spray it on though. For forty bucks I want to smell something or see it bubble!! LOL
