Need Someone To Confirm This Is A Roo...

Well...I did lots of reading on roo traits last night, this little one has the comb coloring and wattles for sure and the late feathering on its head. Based on my reading I spent time observing my gang of 10 today. Lo and behold I think of the 10, 3 are Roos. Definitely more than 10%.

My Ameraucana's comb is starting to turn and it seems he's the top dog. Charged at me flapping his wings several times I opened the coop, whle the others ran for the corner. I failed to announce my approach and startled them - as most of the time I am greeted happily by at least 2 as I start talking to them before I open the door.

One of the RIRs has the distinct male tail shape and is starting to get the dark green tail feathers. While the two girls have the more rounded tails - a distinct difference. No pinking on him yet though.

Guess time will tell...and then I have some decisions to make. Mostly it will be based on temperament and health/safety of the gals.

We have 4 week old chicks and one of our Barred Rocks looks just like your chick in question! I'm thinking mine is a rooster too because even though they are the same age, his comb is much bigger and he has wattles...

My husband is pretty much against roos.. :( Maybe I can just tell him we have a crowing pullet since he doesn't know anything about chickens... ;)

Haha!!! I did tell DH what I suspected, he was against Roos, too. He surprised me saying that if it crowed too much we'd have to get rid of it. I think house placement is such that even if it starts crowing too early he'll never hear it. (fingers crossed).

The Production Black is a breed that originated with the Barred Rock - so there are a lot of similarities in the two. There is also Leghorn and other stuff in the breed. Will produce white eggs.

That was before I discovered the other two. I broke the news this afternoon. Mind you, DH is hopped up on pan killers and muscle relaxers from a badly strained back muscle - so that was an okay conversation, too.

He has not insisted upon immediate removal, so that's good.

My main concern is temperament and health of the girls.

Funny, and it may be worth a try.

They are soooo gorgeous. He really struck a pose in the older photo - I thought "I'm sexy and I know it!". :D

I am still amazed at how much they change so quickly. I find myself at the coop many times a day adjust looking, taking pics and really trying to get to know them. I can't wait to see what mine will finally look like!!
