Need tips on moving out of state with chickens

Yes, check with the agriculture dept of the state to which you are moving - they might request anything from a health certificate from a vet to Avian Influenza testing on each bird...could get pricey fast!
As far as the actual travel, if it's under 10-12 hour drive, I probably would do the travel at night since they don't eat or drink at night, they kind of zone out in the dark. Might be less stressful on them (and you).
Thanks Christwodog, that is some good info!

If you are going out of state and moving a great distance, I would recommend not moving them. They are acclimated to your environment where you are living, you will put them under a huge amount of stress if it is a new environment that may take time to adjust to. Putting them in a new coop/run or have to wait until you get that set up, which will add more stress.

Stressed birds in a new environment will be very susceptible to disease, and there may be new diseases that they have no immunity too. A new environment with a new climate will also stress them. Close confinement and stress can cause very ugly behaviors, sometimes those behaviors can be difficult to stop.

If you rehome the birds locally, they will adjust quickly. It would be much better for these California birds to stay in California. If you get new birds in the new place, you will like those birds too.

ps - I highly agree with the people that say find out what the laws are and follow them. Those laws are to protect people's livelihood in agriculture.
