Need to buy a pellet gun

Here in the High Desert of California, we have hawks, eagles and other birds of prey. They really love to sit on the telephone pole and look down and watch my flock. With my setup I converted 3 large dog pens into runs for my chickens, I covered the tops with bird netting, because my neighbors keep losing their feathered friends to eagles.

I would suggest if it is at all possible to cover the open runs with bird netting. I have not had any swoop down attacks from any bird of prey.

i haven't taken the time to read through all 5 pages so i apologize if this has already been resolved. To the people who said a .177 pellet gun won't take down a hawk im laughing. Do you realize that a 7 gr .177 caliber pellet gun (100 bucks) is shooting out 15 ft lbs? That is more than capable of taking down a hawk. If your in the city limits some municipalities still define a pellet gun as a firearm and have a boundry in which you cannot discharge them. But if you are sneaky no one is going to no

Trust me on this one. Im an experienced deer/turkey/waterfowl/predator hunter.

I've had hawks take call ducks and 12 week old chickens (rir chick - looked pretty big even though not full grown). (were pet quality call ducks, also, a little smaller than a mallard)

I wouldn't trust them not to go after anything.

My MIL had to have stitches in the back of her head after a hawk attack, the hawk sliced her scalp to the skull. If hungry enough they will attack anything that looks like food.

That is HORRIBLE! Glad she's ok. Good news though - I haven't seen the hawk since I scared it off by clapping my hands. Not to say it won't come back, but I'm hoping.

I have a nice beeman .22 cal air gun.

Ive takens skunks and tons or woodchucks with it.

Stick with a .22 sized air gun over 800fps

Also if you get a .177 make sure its over 1000fps

a .177 pellet in the chest will eventually kill a bird, a .22 cal pellect would most likey drop it fast

10 pump crossman at 1200 fps. Quiet enough for city use, and drops critters like a .22 would. When I am serious, I use pointed lead pellets instead of BB's.
