That's great that you can get better feed. You'll find they eat about 2 lbs a month each when grown, but they can waste a lot, so you need to minimize that.

I'm already investigated the feeder that reduce the amount of waste. That is paramount when the feed is expensive. I have several ideas now so just deciding which way to go. I'll likely try a couple of feeders to determine which work best as far as waste. Do you have any suggestions in this department?

I think the best way is to keep the feeder external to the cage area or to screen if off except for holes that they stick their heads through. a 4" PVC pipe with a channel cut out wired to the outside works, or you can do the same with a plastic downspout. I think it's best not to fill it to the top.

There's a post on the quail board where someone's gone a step further and put a large screen over the feed itself on an external feeder. That'll show the little SOBs, lol.

Since I keep my adult birds outside I can't use external feeders. I use the rabbit feeders that mount outside and stick thru the wire. I pop-riveted a piece of sheet metal to the feeder opening to decrease the size of it. Very little waste on most of the cages. Though sometimes, a certain group of birds will waste the entire feeder full. So, I added a piece of 1" x 1" into the opening so they can't swing their heads around as much.

I did this cause I was getting a lot of waste. I cut 6 - 1 1/4" holes. I'm on a small scale for now so this works good for me. I've been thinking of fixing it so I have a pvc coming out the top so I can put more feed

I did see a set up with pvc that came thru the side with holes cut n the trough and fill from the outside. When I get more birds I plan on setting it up like this.
